29          THE EUCHARISTIC LETTER

There, my dear sister, is the model of the virtue of our Institute.

Father Medaille concludes this section with the statement that the Eucharist is the model of all the virtues of a Little Design Community.

Can we see these virtues alive in us today?

“When we reflect on the love in the Eucharist, we are speaking of what is at the heart of Eucharist, the complete gift which Jesus makes of himself to the Father, and to us, out of love. For Medaille, this is the ultimate of loving. Here we have an exchange of Love, a mystery of love. So he calls us to see in the love of the Eucharist, the model of our love of God and neighbour.

The Eucharist reveals to us our own vocation. We discover ourselves as a community of persons, united in the action of the Holy Spirit and called to participate in the loving operations of the Eucharistic Jesus. The charism, the grace of active and inclusive love, conforms us who receive it, into the likeness of Christ in his relationships with his Abba and all of humanity and in a special way with those in need.

It is an incarnational grace, rooted in flesh and blood, lived out in daily pain and pleasure, energized by human passion and limited by human sinfulness.”  (Notes by Sr. Monica Hartnett on the Eucharistic Letter)

How do you experience this ‘exchange of love’ in your life?

We just celebrated our Diamond (60 years) Jubilarians - seven still living - and all are involved in ministry - from volunteering at a cat shelter to finance assistant to spiritual director. I have the privilege of celebrating the Eucharist with them each morning - united in the Spirit, a community of persons. They are role models of the virtues we have been exploring. Each is so different from the other, yet all are committed to the charism..."live d out in daily pain and pleasure...limi ted by human sinfulness." What a freedom to see and what a challenge to live! Jesus accepts us - who we are, where we are on our journey - and invites us to deepen our relationship with him. The love of these Jubilarians, the love of Jesus - both nurture me for ministry, for loving the "dear neighbor."

Right now, I am struggling to be that example of sacrificial love, that great virtue that I have modeled for me in the Eucharist. I am excited and filled with hope and promise at the Spirit's answer to our Church's many needs and prayers for a holy Shepherd. The example of Pope Francis is already challenging my spiritually and practical life-style. "Lowly and Chosen" seems taken from Medaille's maxims---to realize our lowliness and yet know as well that we have a destiny of greatness and fruitfulness in being chosen vessels of the Lord Jesus.

Since the first appearance of Pope Francis with the crowd last Wednesday, my mind and heart has been caught up in a 'meditation in motion'. What an exchange of love we are witnessing:'You pray for me and I will pray for you'; 'You be good to the poor and I will model simplicity and love for the poor'. When he spoke with the media before they left Rome he asked them to use their craft to spread justice and beauty and brotherhood and peace among nations. He embraced them and let himself be embraced. Our Pope Francis is such a model of all the virtues and it seems hopeful in these early days that together -we can "rebuild the church." Let us emerge with new vigour and hope in these last weeks of our Paschal journey!

I desire that my way of life - and all the men and women in Little Design communities - are just such a 'meditation in motion' as we have witnessed this week from our chief Pastor. Like Francis, "Go preach the Gospel.Use words if necessary!"

So often, i come to utter POVERTY in my heart:I've run out of my own resources, answers.I put everything i have on the altar of my heart.I bring what i have put on there, to the altar of the Eucharist. There I can CELEBRATE my poverty, for I am brought back to REMEMBER that there is ONE who has given his total self ("I will give my life to them.")I receive his FLESH and BLOOD .The EXCHANGE happens on the altar and is sealed at COMMUNION.Now, I can go and LIVE the EUCHARISTIC JESUS and TRUST again that the exchange will also happen again in my heart and in my everyday life.
